After Christopher Columbus brought knowledge of North America to the rest of western civilization, it became a race to see who could establish their influence first. France was one of the earliest countries to establish their presence and initially the interaction between the natives and French was for trade. Though the goal of this trade was to establish a further expansion of the French rule, they weren't as established as the English who build forts along the East coast. While the French strengthened their relations with the Native Americans, the French and English animosity was carried over and English and natives ties were strained. Not until the French and Indian war (1754-1763) when the French were expelled, were the English able to able to establish good interactions with the Native Americans. In order to keep native's culture and separate English and Native American land, the making of Indian Country allocated land specifically for the natives after the Peace of Paris in 1763. Though separated, trade was encouraged, but these privileges were exclusive to the British. |
